During the Three Kingdoms Period, there was a famous general named Lv Meng in the State of Wu. He joined the army at a young age and was brave in battle, achieving many military merits. However, due to his poor family background, he never got the chance to study and had a very low level of education. He was often mocked as "brave but lacking in strategy".
When Sun Quan, the King of Wu, learned about this, he specially summoned Lv Meng and advised him: "Now you hold an important position and are in charge of military and political affairs. Bravery alone is not enough. You must read more books to expand your knowledge." At first, Lv Meng didn't take it seriously and excused himself by saying he was too busy with military affairs to have any time for studying. Sun Quan patiently persuaded him: "You just need to read roughly and learn about historical events to gain benefits. I govern the state and I'm busier than you, but I still insist on reading. I deeply feel that reading can broaden one's horizons and inspire thinking."
Lv Meng was deeply moved by Sun Quan's words and began to study diligently from then on. He made use of the gaps between marches and battles to read constantly, and extensively studied various classics. His knowledge reserve grew rapidly.
A few years later, Lu Su, another minister of the State of Wu, was ordered to go on a diplomatic mission to Jingzhou. When he passed by Lv Meng's military camp, he went to visit him. During their conversation, Lu Su found that Lv Meng spoke elegantly. His analysis of the overall situation in the world was clear and logical with unique insights. He was no longer the illiterate military general he used to be. Lu Su exclaimed in surprise: "With your current abilities and strategies, you are no longer the Lv Meng used to be!"
Lv Meng smiled and replied: "After not seeing each other for just a few days, you should look at me with new eyes. Why are you still judging me with your outdated perspective?" Lu Su admired Lv Meng's progress very much and made friends with him. Later, the two supported each other in military and political affairs and made great contributions to the stability of the State of Wu.
